Two days after the U.S. News & World Report, another authoritative ranking confirmed ELTE's leading role in Hungarian higher education. In this year's Quacquarelli Symonds world ranking, which lists more than 1,500 institutions, Eötvös Loránd University achieved 595th place.
Quacquarelli Symonds published the results of the 2027 WUR (World University Rankings) on June 18. During the compilation of the ranking, the performance of more than 8,800 higher education institutions in 106 countries was assessed based on nine weighted indicators (academic reputation, citations, employer satisfaction, employment outcomes for graduates, teacher/student ratio, sustainability, as well as international programs, research collaborations, and international students). In the 2027 top list, the best 1,504 institutions made it, 98 of which appear in the ranking for the first time this year.
Eötvös Loránd University ranked 595th overall, making it the highest-ranking higher education institution in Hungary,
In Europe, it competes in the same league as the University of Siena (572nd), University of Bremen (581st), Brno University of Technology (588th), as well as Manchester Metropolitan University and Tallinn University, which tied for the 600th place.
ELTE's best results were achieved in indicators measuring international research collaborations, sustainability, and the employment prospects of graduates. Examining each indicator, ELTE is also number one domestically in academic reputation, graduate employment prospects, and international research collaboration metrics.
Besides ELTE, nine other Hungarian institutions are also listed in the ranking. Last year’s winner, University of Debrecen, is now second in Hungary and 600th overall. University of Szeged is third domestically and 633rd internationally. Budapest University of Technology and Economics ranked 751–760, University of Pécs 791–800, while Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Óbuda University, Széchenyi István University in Győr, and University of Pannonia ranked 1001–1200. University of Miskolc was placed in the 1401+ category.
Strengthening International Competition
The top of the ranking saw little change compared to previous years, but higher education institutions in East Asia and the Middle East are delivering better performance in key indicators, thereby intensifying international competition – points out the QS statement. This year's top 10 includes four American, four British, one Chinese, and one Singaporean university, with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Imperial College London, and Stanford at the top of the podium.
